Mumbai 2051 - Perhaps

From the looks of it, it's gonna take whole lotta work and few lifetimes, for those khaadi clad politicians, to transform Mumbai into Shanghai. While we play catch-up, I got a chance this past week to visit Shanghai & get a first hand look at how Mumbai would look like, long after I am dead. The aerial pics that you see here, have been taken from the 88th floor observatory of Jin Mao Tower.

It's actually quite frustating to take pics atop the Jin Mao tower. For starters you need to shoot through a thick glass wall & then there are like 1001 tourist pressing themselves against the glass walls, as they pose against the panaromic views. I had consciously left my SLR back home in Sg'pore, and instead, I bought a point & shoot Olympus digital camera. Cheap camera, teeming masses, & dull cloudy weather notwithstanding, the pics did turn out quite ok, i guess.

Indeed, the skyline is so damn impressive and there are so many new structures coming up with lots of construction going around the whole city. The city, it seems, is constantly evolving & is in a state of constant flux. I did feel the underlying sense of urgency, purpose & a definite "buzz" during my 1 week stay in Shanghai.

What you call a handbag, some locals call as "bottle opener" !

ABIW,
You make me sound like I am some hot shot globe trotter. I am anything but that, in fact I have had quite a sedantary desk-bound job in past 7 & half years. I am just a regular code coolie.

But since I am based in Sg, it is quite easy to hop around (for holidays) to neighbouring Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam. Shangai was my first official, work related, trip.

I still feel that there is enough diversity within India itself, in terms of tourist destinations, that we don't need to travel out of India. I wanna travel (more) aswell, but I want to travel within India coz I have hardly seen any place besides Mumbai & Konkan.

ab,
I am indeed writing, loads of lines of code everyday. I am now truly worried that I might have lost the flair to write anything else besides drab logical code.

Glad you found the pics tempting :)

*simles* @ how Mumbai would look like, long after I am dead.

I doubt, it would ever, even then.

Impressive pictures but the building are too damn tall.. to the point of appearing scary .. apna India hi theek hai..

aria,
The buildings do look imposing. The red tower, for one, looks ideal for the likes of Spiderman, Batman and their ilks to stand (hang ?) atop and gaze broodingly over the city..

One needs a certain vision to build cities like this.. Our city planners can't look beyond their own 2 feet.. So i guess we juntaa have no choice but to resign to "theek hein" "chaltaa hein" "jaise hein, accha hein" attitude.
